Revitalising Museums

Storytelling via Experiences

Storytelling via Experiences

Inspired by my love of museums and interactive experiences at such, this project afforded me the opportunity to create my own concept of an immersive, exciting museum experience: to effectively tell the story of a piece in the MAAS Museum via devising an experience and accompanying visual narrative to portray my vision.

I looked at a lot of inspirational work - see: 'Blooming' by Lisa Park or Crosswalk This Way - an installation that was at VIVID Sydney.

I wanted to choose an object that had appeal without it being obvious why it was in the Museum to begin with. I notice that a lot of people don't read the text passages accompanying artifacts in exhibits - so I wanted to give them reason to learn something that is likely often overlooked.

Storyboarding.

Storyboarding.

After some taskflow mapping - I looked to storyboard the concept for my experience. This piece holds a strong and artful message about the dangers of Nuclear and the history of the Fukushima disaster - and so I wanted to help convey the artists' message of Nuclear as a beautiful yet dangerous source, whilst also retaining the emotional impact of the dangers.

I wanted to make sure I was making the most of the visual narrative format - playing with shape, layout, and flow.

I eventually decided - since the main navigation tool in the proposed experience is a Geiger Counter - to use audio waves as a guide to both help with reading paths as well as help convey the levels of audio and the emotional connections throughout the experience.

At this stage, I was also experimenting with potential colour palettes, and I knew that I wanted to use colour to the same effect - to emphasise and help drive the story emotionally. I settled on palette 2 - as it was sharp and yet warm, and also resembled the original piece of interest.

Animatic

There is an accompanying animatic that was made for this project.

It is meant to be a pitch for the concept that works alongside the visual narrative. I frankensteined royalty-free sound bites for the sound design and edited/paced the clips myself!
